Specified-microorganism testing evaluates defined microbial targets.

Depending on the product, these may include:

  • Escherichia coli.
  • Salmonella species.
  • Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • Bile-tolerant Gram-negative bacteria.

Why Might a Product Need Both?

A product may meet a total microbial-count criterion but still have a separate specified-organism requirement.

Likewise, a specified organism may not be detected even though the general microbial count requires review.

What Does a High Enumeration Result Mean?

It means the submitted sample produced a microbial count above the applicable criterion.

The result does not tell you where the microorganisms came from.

What Does “Not Detected” Mean?

The selected microorganism was not detected in the submitted sample under the applicable method.

It does not prove the entire production lot is free of the organism.

Raw Material vs Finished Product

Both types of testing may be relevant at different stages.

Raw-material testing supports supplier and incoming-material decisions.

Finished-product testing evaluates the manufactured product.
