Understanding Microcystins

What are Microcystins?

Microcystins are a class of toxins produced by certain freshwater cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae. These toxins are known for their stability and persistence in aquatic environments, making them a significant concern for water quality and public health.

Harmful Effects of Microcystins

Exposure to microcystins can have serious health implications. These toxins primarily target the liver, leading to liver damage and even liver cancer in severe cases. Symptoms of exposure can include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Liver inflammation and dysfunction
