 Co-op Students

Since 1990, PBR has been a proud participant in the Co-operative Education (Co-op) program provided by Canadian universities. The Co-op program integrates students' classroom learning with paid, professional and practical work experience in their selected fields of study. Specifically, the program is designed to expose the students in the early years of their post secondary education to an applied research while simultaneously allowing them to hone their skills in experimental science.

At PBR the Co-op Students receive their initial training in basic laboratory techniques required in transitioning them in the laboratory's on-going research projects in the areas of life sciences and analytical chemistry. PBR's research program primarily utilizes biological systems such as, bacteria, fungi, and mammalian cell cultures. Our focus of research is on the development of analytical tools and products and validation of assays useful in the evaluation of safety of foods, pharmaceuticals, agricultural and industrial chemicals as well as in specific areas that augment human and the environmental health. The co-op program is funded through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) under the "Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Award" initiative. Typically, the Co-op assignment is for four months in duration, but may be extended to eight months subject to relevant criteria and conditions. Interested students can apply for a work-term placement online by clicking here. In the recent past, most of the co-op students at PBR have come from the University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge, University of British of Columbia, University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University.
